Ruby Tui has been a gem (pun intended) for the New Zealand Black Ferns since 2012. She was a successful product of New Zealand’s program Go4Gold, getting noticed and becoming a mainstay on the sevens squad. Tui brings an abundance of energy  and an aggressive playing style to this Black Ferns roster. She also adds a veteran presence for the younger players In 2016-17 she has been enjoying a very successful year, having won three gold medals on the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series along with a silver medal back at the Rio Olympics. Her strong play earned her the HSBC Player of the Final in Las Vegas as well. It’s hard not to notice her talent when she steps on the field and she will be a thrill to watch in Langford on May 27/28!

1. Why did you decide to start playing rugby?

I felt that through Women’s Rugby there was a real opportunity for me to make a difference in women’s sport in New Zealand.

2. Best advice ever received?

Everytime you step out on the field always believe in your own ability.

3. How would you spend your Saturday if you weren’t playing rugby?

At the beach with a guitar and good company.

4. You are known on your team for what?

The best at harmonizing.

5. What actor would play you in a film about your life?

Denzel Washington

6. IF YOU WERE AN ANIMAL, WHAT WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?

A lion because they are brave, good looking and have crazy manes!

7. What is one thing that no one can beat you at?

One-armed push ups.

8. What is your favourite thing about canada?

The beautiful nature and scenery, it reminds me of home.

9. What’s one place you would love to travel to?

I want to travel the world, i think every single place has something beautiful to offer!

10. You’re warming up for a gold medal match, what song is blasting in your headphones?

There’s no headphones, just the team speaker blasting “Aotearoa” by Stan Walker, Ria Hall, Troy Kingi and Maisey Rika  (Top NZ artists).
